Box Score CHICO, Calif. – Cal State East Bay suffered its first overtime loss of the season on Friday as Chico State's Stephanie Vaquerano scored the lone goal of the match in the 96th minute. The Pioneers had a pair of narrow misses on premium scoring chances to potentially earn the program's first victory over the Wildcats since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2009.
"Our team played really well. We put them under a lot of pressure," said East Bay Head Coach
Amy Gerace. "We nearly got the goal, but their defender cleared the ball off the line."
Rachel Robbert's attempt in the 65th minute forced a Chico State (7-4-2, 4-2-1 CCAA) defender to make a save, prevent the go-ahead goal, and preserve a scoreless match. Less than 10 minutes later the team's season leading scorer
Megan Ravenscroft placed a shot off the crossbar. She gathered the rebound and fired on target forcing one of six saves from Wildcats goalkeeper Brianna Furner.
It was a quiet first half for Cal State East Bay (5-7-2, 2-5-0 CCAA) goalkeeper
Selena Braun. She stopped the lone on target attempt in the 14th minute before recording her last three stops of the match over the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Overtime consisted of five combined corner kicks between the two squads. The Wildcats took the last three before Danica Koos' shot went high. Less than a minute later Chico State regained possession and Megan Tabler fed the pass from midfield to Vaquerano who finished for the golden goal.
"Unfortunately we made critical mistakes at the wrong time. I thought we outplayed Chico State in the second half, but this game requires putting the ball in the goal to win and we didn't do that," added Gerace.
Chico State moves into sole possession of third place in the CCAA standings with four matches left to play. The Pioneers are in a 3-way tie for ninth, but sit only two games out of the fourth spot.
Cal State East Bay will look to end a 3-game skid on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Cal State San Bernardino (11-3-0, 4-3-0 CCAA). The Coyotes are coming off a 1-0 win against No. 21 ranked Cal State Stanislaus.
