Box Score CHICO, Calif. – Neither team found the back of the net on Friday evening as Cal State East Bay and Chico State played to a scoreless draw at University Soccer Stadium. Overtime attempts from
Nathan Durio and
Michael Tieku clanged off the framework in near-misses of a golden goal and the team's first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win of the year.
"The guys battled hard tonight. We did a good job of winning the first and second balls, as well as the aerial battles," praised East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo of his squad's effort.
Cal State East Bay went on the offensive in the opening five minutes earning two corner kicks and taking two of its three first half shots.
Scott Dobson put his attempt on target and
Trevor Ross' attempt was blocked by a Chico State (6-5-2, 1-5-1 CCAA) defender.
The Pioneers were on the brink of victory in the 104th minute as Tieku's shot was saved and Durio followed up with the rebound. His attempt caromed off the post and was the final shot taken by the visiting side.
"We were very dangerous in overtime. We had two great chances to score and overall hit the frame three times during the run of play," said Cumbo. "Their goalkeeper gave them a great performance and came up big."
Cal State East Bay goalkeeper
Adrian Topete made two saves while earning his second solo shutout effort of the year. Chico State's Luke Dennison also made two saves in picking up his fifth shutout on the year.
Friday was the fifth match in seven CCAA contests the Pioneers have played extra time. It was the team's third consecutive overtime game which ended in a tie.
Cal State East Bay (3-6-4, 0-4-3 CCAA) will travel to Cal State San Bernardino (7-4-0, 3-4-0 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 19.
