Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer concluded its trip to Southern California suffering a 2-0 defeat to UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field. The host Tritons extended their unbeaten streak to four matches as beneficiaries of a first half own goal and a second half score from Malek Bashti.
"The own goal was clearly unfortunate. UCSD is a tough team to come back against as they do a very good job of game management," said East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "We struggled to get anything substantial going and weren't able to break them down in the second half."
Cal State East Bay (3-6-3, 0-4-2 CCAA) took a season-low four shots on Sunday, placing only one first half attempt by
Rica Guerra on target. UC San Diego (9-3-1, 4-1-1 CCAA) outshot the Pioneers 12-4 overall with most of the advantage coming in an 8-1 second half.
Bashti's shot in the 17th minute hit the right post of the framework, deflected off a Pioneer defender, and in for the go-ahead score. Bashti put in the back of the net himself in the 68th minute with a near side attempt set up by a lead pass down the left side from teammate Sam Palano.
Palano led all players with three shots taken. He was one of seven different Tritons to attempt a shot in the match.
East Bay goalkeeper
Adrian Topete made two saves in the loss. UC San Diego's Cameron McElfresh picked up his sixth solo shutout of the season and lowered his season goals against average to 0.60.
Cal State East Bay will play a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association matches on the road this upcoming weekend against Chico State (Oct. 17) and Cal State San Bernardino (Oct. 19).
