Box Score POMONA, Calif. – Despite a season-high eight saves from East Bay goalkeeper
Selena Braun, the Cal State East Bay women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Field on Friday. The Broncos made the most of their limited second half opportunities scoring three times on just five shots over the final 45 minutes.
Cal Poly Pomona (7-4-0, 2-3-0 CCAA) took the first of its 13 shots during the opening period only 28 seconds into the match. Braun made seven of her eight saves to keep it scoreless while the Pioneers usually potent offense was in search of a spark.
"We struggled to find our rhythm today and are typically better with 50-50 balls. We didn't play to our strengths as a team," said East Bay Head Coach
Amy Gerace.
An
Andrea Hernandez shot on target in the 41st minute was the lone attempt by Cal State East Bay in the half. Following an on target header from
Megan Ravenscroft in the 50th minute, the Pioneers were unable to force Broncos goalkeeper Ricki Ives to make any more saves in her solo shutout effort.
Shortly thereafter Cal Poly Pomona broke through as Rachel Killigrew scored from 30 yards out. Her free kick glanced off the crossbar and beyond the goal line for the eventual game-winner. She would become the first of three different Broncos to score their respective first goals of the 2014 campaign.
CPP teammate Melissa Martinez set up Hailey James for her first in the 77th minute. Laura Miller added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to seal the match. The victory extends the team's win streak over Cal State East Bay to five matches, and unbeaten streak to seven (6-0-1).
"We actually played much better in the second half but their five shots resulted in three goals and we were not as fortunate. Regardless of today's result, I love this team's drive and motivation. (The team) wasn't happy with today, but everyone is eager to get back on the field," added Gerace.
Cal State East Bay (5-5-2, 2-3-0 CCAA) will take on UC San Diego (4-5-2, 1-3-1 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m.
