Big Game James Leads Pioneers to Victory

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay scored three times during Friday night's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest en route to a 3-1 home win over Cal State Monterey Bay. Pioneers newcomer Trey James supplied two goals and assisted on the game-winning score in his first start of the season.

James was the standout amongst a team effort that got things off to a fast start. Arthur Ethel scored at the 2:31 mark to give the Pioneers their first lead of the season.

"We got off to a great start tonight and never looked back. The whole team stepped up today and I am happy for them," said fifth year Head Coach Andy Cumbo.

A pivotal 59-second stretch early in the second half swung the momentum entirely towards the home side. A pair of yellow cards issued to Monterey Bay (4-2-1, 2-2-1 CCAA) within 50 seconds of each other, followed by James' first goal just 10 seconds later gave the Pioneers a 2-0 cushion.

Under five minutes later James showed off his long distance striking capabilities. He settled a loose ball and fired a shot from about 22 yards out centered on goal. James' team-leading second goal of the season provided extra insurance that came in handy in the waning moments.

Otters junior Anthony Velazquez dribbled from midfield down the right side and fired a strike to the far netting from inside the 18-yard box. CSUMB avoided the shutout with just over five minutes left in regulation.

After being held to under 10 team shots in its first three games of 2013, Cal State East Bay has fired off 11 or more in each of its last four matches. Tonight's effort equaled a season-high 18 shots, turning into a season-best three goals.

Bryce Bookhamer played 80 minutes in goal and held the Otters scoreless over that span. He picks up his first win of the season and eighth of his Pioneer career.

East Bay (1-6-0, 1-4-0 CCAA) will host San Francisco State (3-3-1, 2-2-1 CCAA) on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m.
