HAYWARD, Calif. – Men's soccer returns to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action this weekend with a pair of road contests. The Pioneers will take on Humboldt State (2-1-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) on Friday, Sept. 20, and Sonoma State (2-1-1, 1-1-0 CCAA) on Sunday, Sept. 22.
Both the Pioneers and Jacks are in search of their first league wins of the season. Cal State East Bay will hope to repeat its effort at Humboldt State in which it went on the road for a 3-1 victory. In that contest current Pioneers starting goalkeeper
Bryce Bookhamer recorded 12 saves.
Cal State East Bay hopes to go on the offensive early when facing Humboldt State. The Pioneers hope to grab their first lead in a game this season and will likely need to score early against the CCAA's No. 3 offense in Humboldt State.
The Jacks have scored four goals in two league contests and nine times in four matches this year. HSU senior Zach Hammond leads the team with four goals and has scored in three of the team's four matches. Last season he led the squad with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists).
Friday will mark the home opener for the Jacks who have played each of its first four contests on the road this season. Most recently Humboldt State earned its first point following a 1-1 double overtime draw at San Francisco State.
Last year East Bay and Sonoma State met three times with the Seawolves taking the series. The Pioneers won their series and season finale after
Rey Suarez put away the lone score of the game in the early minutes of the second half.
All eight games (four each) these two squads have played this season have been decided by one or ended in a tie. In addition, the previous four meetings between these two teams have been decided by one.
