ORLANDO --- Debby De Angelis, who recently announced her retirement as Cal State East Bay's Director of Athletics, recevied a prestigious honor on Wednesday from the Collegiate Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA). De Angelis was the receipient of the 2013 George Eldridge Distinguished Service Award, which, since 1956, has been presented to retired or retiring CABMA members who have demonstrated oustanding service to the field of intercollegiate athletics.Â
"CABMA was my first professional development association, and it was excellent for my career development," said De Angelis. "CABMA has consistently provided some of the best professional development in our business. It also has been the source of many great friends in the profession, and I value that, as well as the opportunity to help me advance in athletics."
De Angelis has spent more than 40 years working in intercollegiate athletics. She began her career in athletics administration as the athletics business manager (and women's crew coach) at Northeastern University in 1979. She was a business manager for the first 15 years of her adminstrative career, which included a seven-year stint at Cal State Northridge.
De Angelis then spent the last 19 years of her career overseeing the athletics business manager. She was the Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Operations at Towson University before coming to Cal State East Bay and has been a CABMA member since 1990. She served for 12 years at the helm of Pioneer Athletics, during which time Debby navigated CSUEB through the complex process of transitioning to NCAA Division II.
De Angelis recevied her award at the annual CABMA Awards Luncheon, taking place as part of the 2013 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Affiliates Convention. She spoke briefly in front of a crowd of several hundred CABMA members representing Division I, II, and III schools from all over the country.
