Pioneers Suffer a Pair of Narrow Losses

SEASIDE, Calif. ---
The Pioneer water polo team suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses on Saturday. Cal State East Bay (11-12, 1-4 WWPA) was edged out by Cal State Monterey Bay (8-15, 2-3 WWPA) by a single goal, 10-9, in the morning. The Pioneers then lost by one agaain, 14-13, to Concordia in their second game. 

Game 1 -- CSUMB 10, CSUEB 9

East Bay had it going offensively to start the game, but the Otters got three first-quarter goals from Julia Cooper and took a 4-3 lead. The teams played even in the second quarter, notching two goals each and giving Monterey Bay a narrow 6-5 halftime advantage.

Allison Zell and Charlie Warburton eached netted their second goals of the game, as it remained tight through the third quarter. The Pioneer defense allowed three scores in the period, which put them down two heading into the fourth.

Cooper's game-high fourth game of the morning put the Otters up 10-7, which was enough to secure the victory. Julia Charlesworth and Warburton both scored in the final two minutes, but the Pioneer comeback ran out of time in the 10-9 loss.

Warburton led the way with a hat trick for East Bay, posting a career high with three goals. Zell notched two scores, while Charlesworth, Sara Hudyn, Jennifer Lightbody, and Hollie Mickelson netted one apiece. Marrina Nation tallied 10 saves in the cage. 

Game 2 -- Concordia 14, CSUEB 13

The Pioneers got off to a slow start in the second game, going scoreless in the first quarter and falling behind 2-0. However, the offense exploded for five goals in the second quarter, including three from Claire Pierce. The Eagles kept pace, however, finding the back of the net three times. The teams went into halftime tied 5-5. 

East Bay continued its offensive barrage coming out of the break. Pierce scored two more goals, as the team racked up five total the third quarter. Unfortunately, Concordia kept pace, netting six goals of their own. The Eagles held onto a narrow 11-10 advantage in what became a high-scoring game heading into the fourth.

The Pioneer attempted a comeback in the final period, but they weren't able to tie the game, as both team scored three goals. Hudyn found the back of the cage with 1:27 remaining in the game to make it 13-12 Concordia. However, the Eagles answered back, putting the game away with their final goal with just over a minute left.

Pierce led all scorers with five goals, tying her with Concordia's Jamie Clark. Hudyn notched a pair of goals, and Charlesworth, Warburton, Lightbody, Zell, Kate McAfee, and Simonne Call all scored once. Nation had seven saves and an assist for the Pioneers in the cage. 

CSUEB has now lost three straight games and has just two WWPA contests remaining on their schedule. The first of those will be next Friday when East Bay hosts Colorado State. The final home game of 2013 is set for 4 p.m. at Pioneer Pool.
