Pioneers Play Overtime in Fifth Straight Match

10/18/2013 10:55:00 PM

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State needed extra time to decide a victor in round two of the 'Battle of the Bay' this season on Friday. Gators freshman Kelsey Wetzstein's first collegiate goal was golden, coming just seconds into double overtime to break a scoreless tie in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) inside Cox Stadium.

Neither team scored through 100 minutes as the game headed into a second 10-minute overtime period. Nineteen seconds into the frame SFSU's Sarah Guensler and Chloe Harrington combined to find Wetzstein in striking range. The freshman finished off the early attack from about seven yards out.

The Pioneers final shot on goal for the match came in the 59th minute from Andrea Hernandez. She led the team on Friday taking three shots, but Cal State East Bay was unable to put a strike on target the rest of the way.

Neither team put a shot on goal over the final 30 minutes of regulation, but San Francisco State (5-5-3, 4-5-2 CCAA) took 14 shots in regulation and put two of its three shots on target during the first overtime period. In total the Gators enjoyed an 18-10 advantage in shots taken.

Cal State East Bay's Donna Williams and San Francisco State's Allison Land made five saves. Williams continues to lead the CCAA and has racked up 76 saves in 2013.

Cal State East Bay (3-8-2, 3-6-2 CCAA) will be on the road Sunday, Oct. 20, against Cal State Monterey Bay (5-6-2, 4-5-2 CCAA).
