Pioneers Top Notre Dame de Namur in Double Overtime Thriller

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Eugénie Foote scored off a rebounded shot from inside the box in the seventh minute of the second overtime to propel to the Pioneer women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 5.

The Pioneers, now 2-0 on the season, controlled the second overtime getting off three unanswered shots.

In the 106th minute, Alyssa Rodriguez had a shot knocked away by Argonaut goalkeeper Kelsee Berryman. Foote got the rebounded shot and put the ball in the net from six yards out for her second goal of the season.

“We responded with a strong showing in the second overtime,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “I like the way we kept attacking until the winning goal was scored.”

In the 91st minute of the first overtime, the Argonauts' Adriana Cortes had a shot go wide.

Notre Dame, now 1-3, had two more scoring opportunities in the final four minutes of the first overtime, but was unable to score.

An outstanding Pioneer defense, anchored by senior Zuly Diaz, allowed only one shot by the Argonauts in the first half.

“I'm really happy with the way our defenders played tonight,” Gerace said. “Zuly played a super match and did a great job directing the defense.” Shannon Fontes and freshman Kelsey Lamb played well on defense tonight.” 

The first shot of the match came in the 10th minute when a header by the Pioneers' Shianna Falk was saved by Argonaut goalkeeper Carrie Turgeon.

East Bay cashed in the first goal of the match when Kara Yamamoto scored from 17 yards out in the 20th minute. For Yamamoto it was her second goal of the season. Falk was credited with the assist.

In the 33rd minute, Falk had a shot turned away by Turgeon.

Notre Dame began pushing the ball up field in the second half, resulting in two shots in the first five minutes.

The Argonauts' Amrun Singh had a shot go over the net in the 50th minute.

Five minutes later, Jessica Santos had a shot save at the last second by Pioneer goalkeeper Jamie Botteon.

The Pioneers got their first shot of the second period in the 64th when Katie Brawley had a shot go wide of the net.

In the 69th minute, Yamamoto had a shot by Kelsee Berryman.

Notre Dame de Namur tied the match in the 72nd minute when Santos scored her second goal of the season.

The Argonauts continued the pressure two minutes later as Marisa Schneider's shot was saved by Botteon.

Each team had a chance to score four minutes later as Falk had a shot turned away by Berryman and the Argonauts' Cheyenne Kisthardt attempt went over the net.

The Argonauts got off eight shots including three on goal in the second half.

For the match, the Pioneers outshot the Argonauts by a 13-12 margin. The Pioneer had eight shots on goal led by Falk with three and Yamamoto with two.

East Bay will begin CCAA play on September 9 with a home match against Sonoma State at 11:30 a.m.
