Pioneers Open 2012 Campaign with Decisive Win Over UC Merced

Box Score HAYWARD – The Cal State East Bay  women's soccer team opened the 2012 campaign with an 8-1 victory over UC Merced at Pioneer Stadium.

For the match, the Pioneers outshot the Bobcats by a 28-3 margin. Breahna Berry led the Pioneer offensive attack with two goals. Shianna Falk and Claudia Luna each had five shots.  

“We came out focused in the first half and accomplished the things the team worked on during the preseason,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “The match was good because we were able to play a lot of people.” 

The Pioneers put the pressure on the Bobcats in the early going with five unanswered shot.

East Bay took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Ariana Gordon scored on a cross shot across the goal. 

A minute later, Kara Yamamoto scored from five yards out to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.

In the 17th minute, Berry put a nice move on a Bobcat defender and scored from four yards out as the Pioneers extended their lead to 3-0.

Berry added her second goal of the half a minute later and Shianna Falk scored from 10 yards away in the 41st minute.

The Pioneers outshot the Bobcats by a 20-1 margin in the first period.

Dublin High School product Joanna Giron gave the Pioneers a 6-0 lead with a goal in the 47th minute.

The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute when Staphany Flores scored from three yards out.  Four minutes earlier, Flores had a shot blocked near the net.

Eugénie Foote scored on a corner kick from Yamamoto in the 72nd minutes as the Pioneers held a 7-1 advantage.

The Pioneers concluded the scoring in the 84th minute when Anne Dunne scored in front of the goal.

“I'm glad we got this match under our belt,” Gerace said. “We have a busy schedule this week including our CCAA opener against Sonoma State on September 9."

East Bay will host Notre Dame de Namur on September 5.
