Pioneers Continue Solid Play in Setback to #14 Chico State

Box Score CHICO, Calif. – The Pioneers played another solid match, but came up on the short end in a 1-0 loss to Chico State on September 16.

With the defeat, the Pioneers are 0-3-0 in the CCAA and 2-3-0 overall. Chico State improves to 2-2 in CCAA play and 4-2-0 for the season.

Both teams had five shots on goal. The Wildcats held a 19-14 advantage in total shots. The Pioneers' Shannon Fontes recorded four shots followed by Shianna Falk with three. Pioneer goalkeeper Nina Cefalo was strong in the net as she recorded four saves.

For the second straight match, the Pioneers played outstanding defense limiting the Wildcats to one goal. In the past two road matches, the Pioneers have allowed only two goals.

“This was another match where we left the field feeling like we played well enough to win,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “Zuly Diaz had another great game defensively and Shianna was spectacular for 90 minutes.”

The lone goal of the match came in the 83rd minute when the Wildcats' Denni Jo Berger scored from 15 yards out. Scotie Walker was credited with the assist. East Bay had a chance to tie the match in the 84th minute, but a header by Fontes went high over the net. 

Both teams turned on the pressure to open the second half. Ashlyn Conlin's shot was saved by Cefalo in the 46th minute, while a moment later, Jennie Barto had an attempt blocked by the Pioneer defense.

Fontes had two scoring opportunities the following two minutes, but was unable to put the ball in the net.

In the 51st minute, the Wildcats' Denni Jo Berger had a shot blocked. Falk had a shot turned away by  Furner in the 61st minute. Eight minutes later, the Wildcats' Stephanie Vaquerano header went wide.

The two teams played a scoreless first half as Chico State outshot Cal State East Bay by a 6-2 margin.
The Wildcats had two shot attempts in the opening nine minutes.

Kara Yamamoto had a shot turned away in the 19th minute and three minutes later, Breahna Berry attempt on goal was saved by Furner. Late in the first half, Falk had a shot saved by Furner. Cefalo turned away three shots in the first half.

East Bay will continue its CCAA road trip on September 21 with a match against Cal State Los Angeles.
