Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer men's soccer team opened the 2012 campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory over visiting University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Aug. 30.
“Our guys did well from the beginning,” Pioneer Head Coach
Andy Cumbo said. “We established a good tempo tonight.”
East Bay controlled the tempo in the first 10 minutes.
Andres Ponce had a header go just wide in the fifth minute. One minute later,
Florian Reppin had a shot go over the net.
Rey Suarez had a shot turned away by Mountain Lion goalkeeper Brandon Costa in the 10th minute.
The Pioneers cashed in on the first goal of the match in the 25th minute.
Chris Lara fed Reppin with a perfect pass off a free kick. Reppin proceeded to get the ball pass Costa from six yards out for the goal.
East Bay had a golden opportunity to extend its lead in the 41st minute, but a breakaway shot by
Arthur Ethel was turned away by Costa at the last second.
The Pioneers had their way in the first half holding a 7-0 advantage in shots.
Colorado Springs had its first scoring opportunity in the 49th minute as Mash Shaswar had a shot saved by Pioneer goalkeeper
Rene Martinez.
“Rene's save was the turning point in the match,” Cumbo said. “We scored twice after the save and regained our momentum.”
East Bay regained the tempo as
Paul Dewhurst had a shot go wide in the 51st minute, and two minutes later,
Javier Martin had a shot saved by Costa.
Martinez saved another shot attempt by Shaswar in the 54th minute.
Lara scored in front of the net in the 61st minute as the Pioneers increased their lead to 2-0. Reppin was credited with the assist.
Reppin added his second goal of the match scoring on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute to give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage.
“Florian had a solid match,” Cumbo said. “He's a great leader on both sides of the ball.”
For the match, the Pioneer outshot the Mountain Lions by a 12-5 margin and held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Reppin scored twice and added an assist for the Pioneers. Martinez turned away four shots in the second half.
