Pioneers Battle Wildcats to Scoreless Tie

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal State East Bay and Chico State battled to a scoreless tie at Pioneer Stadium on October 5.  Last month, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie.

The Pioneers are 1-4-3 in CCAA play and 2-5-3 overall.   Chico State stands at 4-2-3 in the CCAA and 5-5-3 for the season.

East Bay was outshot by a 16-12 margin. Felix Jaekel led the Pioneers with three shots including two on goal. Timo Baeuerle also had three shots. Pioneer goalkeepers Rene Martinez and Bryce Bookhamer combined to blank the Wildcats for 110 minutes. Martinez recorded six saves in 65 minutes in the net. The Pioneer backline, led by Scott Dobson, turned in another strong performance.

“Chico is a solid team and we did a good job of shutting them down in front of the goal tonight,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. “I think we took care of the ball really well tonight, especially in the first half.”

Martinez came up big for the Pioneers in the two overtime periods. He turned away two shots including one in the final minute of the first overtime. Martinez saved two shots by the Wildcats in the 105th and 108th minutes of the second overtime.

The Pioneers had a chance to win the game in overtime, but a shot by Javier Martin went wide in the 95th minute and Derrek Driggs had an attempt on goal turned away by Wildcat goalkeeper Sam Evans in the 107th minute.

East Bay and Chico State each had 10 shots in regulation. Baeuerle had a shot blocked in the 43rd minute while Rey Suarez attempt on goal was turned away by a defender in the 78th minute of regulation.

“We're not thrilled about the draw, but it's another positive step,” Cumbo said. “We're looking forward to playing again at home on Sunday.”

The Pioneers will host Cal State Stanislaus on October 7 at 11:30 a.m.
