“I thought the team played the best half of soccer I've seen in the first half,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said.  “I was proud of their effort the entire game and thought individually a lot of players were fantastic. Zuly was consistent as usual and the entire back line was great.  Sara Yamasaki had the best game I've seen her play.   Shi, Berry and Eug in the first half did a great job finding each other and putting UCSD under a lot of pressure.  Off the bench, Kelsey, Anne and Ally were very effective.”

U.C. San Diego took control in the second half, outshooting the Pioneers by a 13-1 margin. Jessica Wi scored her third goal of the season in the 68th minute to cut the Pioneers lead to 2-1. The Tritons tied the score in the 78th minute when Cassie Callahan put in her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

“UCSD is a very dynamic team and we weren't able to absorb their pressure in the second half,” Gerace said.

The Tritons had five shots in the first overtime period, including three attempts in the final two minutes, but were unable to score. Izzy Pozurama scored the game winner in the 101st minute with her seventh goal of the season.

The Pioneers will host Cal State San Bernardino on “Pioneer Senior Day” on October 28 at 11:30 a.m.
