HAYWARD - Following its first undefeated weekend of the season, the Pioneer men's soccer team will host U.C. San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino this week. The Pioneers will host U.C. San Diego on October 26 at 7:00 p.m. East Bay will take on visiting Cal State San Bernardino on October 28 at 2:00 p.m. Cal State East Bay lost to U.C. San Diego 3-0 and Cal State San Bernardino 3-1 last season. On October 28, the Pioneers will honor seniors
Florian Reppin,
Andres Ponce,
Rene Martinez and
Matt Mitchell for their contributions to the East Bay men's soccer program.
The Pioneers are 2-6-4 in CCAA play and 4-7-4 overall. Last season the Pioneers were 2-16.
“The guys are playing with a lot of confidence and having a good time,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “We're on a three game unbeaten streak and we look to extend that streak this weekend.” “We've added another game to our schedule as a result of the Humboldt State cancellation. We'll be playing Sonoma State in a non-CCAA match next Tuesday. We want to maximize the playing experience and also extend our season as much as possible.”
Rey Suarez, coming off a three-goal weekend, leads the Pioneers with four goals scored. Suarez also has a team-best 33 shots. Reppin has scored eight points on two goals and four assists. Reppin is followed by
Javier Martin with three goals and one assist.
The Pioneers continue to receive solid play from defenders
Timo Baeuerle,
Scott Dobson,
Paul Dewhurst and
Salvador Mendoza, and goalkeepers
Rene Martinez and
Bryce Bookhamer. In 14 games, Martinez has allowed 1.03 goals with 39 saves and a .830 save percentage. Bookhamer has yielded 1.48 goals with 24 saves in 14 games.
U.C. San Diego is third in the CCAA South Division with a 7-3-3 record. The Tritons are 8-4-3 for the season. Evan Walker and Tsuk Haroush each have scored two goals for the Tritons. Haroush has a team-best 20 shots. Goalkeeper Josh Cohen, selected the CCAA Player of the Week, has six shutouts, 38 saves and a 0.47 goals against average in 11 games in the net.
Cal State San Bernardino stands in fourth place in the CCAA South Division at 4-4-5. The Coyotes are 4-4-7 overall. Ricardo Velasco is the Roadrunners' leading scorer with 11 points on five goals and one assist. Leo Mendoza has scored three goals for the Roadrunners. Goalkeeper Tanner Olinger has allowed 0.63 goals a game with 42 saves and five shutouts in 14 games.
“We have continually made progress throughout the season and we're pleased that we are still building momentum,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “We have proven we can play with the best in the CCAA. We tied the top two schools in the North three times and our only defeat came by one goal.” “UCSD is still in the hunt for the post season so Friday gives us the opportunity to now beat a team who should be playing in the post season.”
The Pioneers will conclude the 2012 regular season on October 30th with a non-conference home match against Sonoma State. The match will begin at 5:00 p.m.
