Pioneers Blanked by No. 12 Sonoma State

Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Pioneer women's soccer team was shutout by 12th ranked Sonoma State 4-0 on October 11.

Following the defeat, the Pioneers stand at 2-7-1 in CCAA play. East Bay is 4-7-1 for the season. The victory improves the Seawolves CCAA record to 8-1-1. Sonoma State is 11-1-1 overall. The Pioneers finished the game with four shots, compared to 14 for Sonoma State.

“Sonoma State is a very strong team,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “We worked hard this week, and I know the players are disappointed with the outcome.”

The Seawolves had two shots in the first three minutes of the match. Pioneer goalkeeper Nina Cefalo turned away a shot by Ashley Martin in the 17th minute.

Gretel Amman scored her first goal of the season in the 19th minute to give Sonoma State a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Seawolves extended their lead to 2-0 when Cara Curtin scored her team-leading 11th goal.

Shannon Fontes and Shianna Falk each had a shot blocked for the Pioneers in the final 11 minutes of the first half.

Curtin scored her second goal of the game and 12th of the season in the 52nd minute as the Seawolves took a 3-0 lead.

The Pioneers responded in the 54th minute as Kara Yamamoto had a shot turned away by Seawolves' goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua who recorded her eighth shutout of the season. Cefalo denied Margi Osmundson a goal with a save in the 57th minute.

A final scoring chance for the Pioneers came in the 75th minute when Zuly Diaz had a shot go wide.
The Seawolves ended the scoring in the 77th minute as Martin tallied her fourth goal of the season.

Cal State East Bay will host Humboldt State on October 13. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
