HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer men's basketball team stands at 5-5 in CCAA play and 7-7 for the season following a 93-76 setback to visiting Chico State on January 20.
The Wildcats are in a four-way tie for second place in the CCAA with a 7-4 record. Chico State improves to 13-4 overall.
Roshun Wynne and
Mark Samuels each scored 19 points for the Pioneers.
The Wildcats' Damario Sims led all scorers with 28 points while Jordan Semple came off the bench to score 19 points.
For the game, the Pioneers shot 50.9 percent from the field.
Chico State, which shot 56.9 percent from the field, held a 38-20 advantage on the boards.
“The Wildcats are a very good team,” Pioneer assistant coach Ray Villegas said. “They took it to us in every aspect of the game and came away with the victory.”
The Pioneers led 12-11 with 12:53 left in the first half on a
Jacari Whitfield basket.
The Wildcats went on a 10-0 run to take a 21-12 lead with 9:50 remaining.
Cal State East Bay regained the lead, 26-25, three minutes later on a Wynne three-pointer.
Chico State hit three 3-pointers to hold a 36-28 advantage with four minutes left.
A layup by Semple as time expired gave the Wildcats a 48-36 halftime lead.
The Wildcats never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 19 points with 1:06 remaining.
The Pioneers came within seven points, 72-65, with eight minutes left following a Samuels three-point play.
Cal State East Bay will conclude the first half of CCAA play on January 21 with a home game against Cal State Stanislaus. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
