Pioneers Battle Heat and Slow Start in Loss to Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. –
The Pioneer women's soccer team couldn't overcome the heat and four first half goals in a 6-2 defeat to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.

The Coyotes, who snapped a four-game losing streak, improve to 1-5-1 in the CCAA and 2-6-1 for the season. The Pioneers are 2-4-1 in CCAA play and 3-5-1 for the season.

Carissa Kutkowski gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead with her second goal of the season in the 14th minute.

Kutkowski scored her second goal of the match seven minutes later.

In the 24th minute, the Coyotes took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Kristina Gomez. Brittany Wilding made it 4-0 with a goal in the 27th minute.                                                                                                                                               

The Coyotes outshot the Pioneers by a 9-1 margin in the first half.

“We're on our heels the first 15 minutes,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “Chasing them in this heat on a big field was a real challenge in the first half.”

Cal State San Bernardino extended its lead to 5-0 in the 57th minute as Jani Carmona scored her first goal of the season.

The Pioneers' Ariana Gordon got Cal State East Bay on the scoreboard with a goal in the 64th minute. Eugenie Foote was credited with the assist.

Cal State San Bernardino scored its final goal in the 65th minute as Diana Enriquez converted a shot from inside 18 yards.

Gordon nailed a header off a crossing pass from Kara Yamamoto in the 70th minute for her second goal of the match and third of the season.

“I was pleased with the second half, especially Ari Gordon who scored two goals off the bench,” Gerace said.  Kara Yamamoto and Breanna Baker also did a great job playing all 90 minutes.”

Cal State East Bay will play at UC San Diego on October 2 at 12 p.m.
