HAYWARD, Calif. -
The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team put together a strong second half to win their first game of the season over Dominican University, 2-0, on Sept. 3.

“We opened up the field which helped us get more attacks in the second half,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. “We're able to keep the ball more and make Dominican come to us.”

Following a shot by the Penguins Nuri Bon-Acosta in the 47th minute, the Pioneers took over the tempo of the match.

Sam Duenas had a breakaway and shot just wide of the net in the 59th minute. Duenas had another shot blocked by Dominican goalkeeper Casey Gibson seven minutes later.

Cal State East Bay maintained the pressure and scored in the 70th minute as Tyler Andersen converted a second kick off Rey Suarez free kick off the cross bar.

Six minutes Suarez nailed a shot from 20 yards out past Gibson to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.

“Rey had a great goal,” Cumbo said. “He's been a big offensive threat in the two games.”

Pioneer goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer blocked a shot from David Mendez in the 85th minute to preserve the shutout.

The two teams battled for the first 30 minutes of the opening half.

Dominican controlled the final four minutes getting three shots including two on goal.

After being outshot in the first half, the Pioneers ended the match with 14 shots compared to 12 for the Penguins.

Bookhamer had four saves while Andersen and Duenas had three shots each. The Pioneers received outstanding defensive play from Paul Dewhurst and Steven Belalcazar. Suarez' three points earned him Fall Classic Golden Boot honors, and was  joined by Belalcazar and Andersen on the All-Tournament Team.

“This was a big win for us,” Cumbo said. “The win is good for the morale and confidence of the players. We're playing well going into the CCAA opener.”

The Pioneers, now 1-1 for the season, will begin CCAA play with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 9. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
