East Bay Drops Tough 2-1 Decision to Chico State

HAYWARD, Calif. –
The Pioneer women's soccer team lost a tough 2-1 decision to visiting Chico State on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams played on even terms for most of the first half.

Chico State opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Lisa Webster scored her first goal of the season.

A shot by Shannon Fontes was saved by Chico State goalkeeper Brianna Furner in the 44th minute.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 in the 49th minute as Alyx Williams knocked in a rebounded shot.

The Pioneers took control of the match and scored their first goal of match in the 63rd minute. Ariana Nobrega scored her team-leading third goal of the season with an assist from Kara Yamamoto and Breanna Baker.

Shianna Falk had a shot saved by Furner in the 64th minute.

Cal State East Bay had a final chance to tie the match in the 82nd minute, but a shot by Claudia Luna was blocked.

“I thought our team did a good job possessing the ball, Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “We continue to get better and I like what I'm seeing.”

The Pioneers, 2-3-1 in the CCAA and 3-4-1 overall, outshot the Wildcats 11-10. Pioneer goalkeeper Nina Cefalo had three saves.
