HAYWARD, Calif. – Inspired by a celebration of former Pioneer soccer players from two championships teams, the Cal State East Bay men's soccer team lost a tough 1-0 CCAA match to visiting Chico State on Sunday.
“The guys were up for the game and played with commitment,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “The players wanted to be sure to put together a solid performance for the highly decorated Pioneer soccer alums honored today.”

Andres Ponce had a shot go wide in the 14th minute. In the 39th minute,
Javier Martin's went over the net.
A shot by the Wildcats' Luke Walker went wide as time expired in the first half.

Bryce Bookhamer turned away a shot by Nick Tedrow in the 46th minute. Bookhamer saved another Wildcats' shot seven minutes later.
The Pioneers put the pressure on the Wildcats' defense with two shots on goal in a two-minute span.
A yellow card on Bookhamer resulted in the only goal of the match as Octavio Guzman converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
Bookhamer came up with two saves as Chico State put up three more shots in the next six minutes.
Martin had a shot go wide in East Bay's final scoring opportunity in the 88th minute.
Chico State outshot Cal State East Bay by a 15-7 margin. Tedrow led the Wildcats with four shots. Martin had three shots for the Pioneers.
“With nine players who started in matches this season, and two other key players out of action, we kept a good Chico State team intact,” Cumbo said.
Cal State East Bay, 0-6 in CCAA play and 1-7 overall, will play at Cal State San Bernardino on September 30.
