East Bay Unable to Overcome Three Second-Half Goals in Loss to Jacks

ARCATA, Calif. –
The Pioneer men's soccer team has been playing short-handed with five key defenders out of the lineup. Cal State East Bay played the Lumberjacks tough in the early going, but yielded three second half goals in a 4-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon.

We had a decent first half and absorbed a lot of their long balls,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. Our team had a slow start to begin the second half and Humboldt State was able to control the ball.” We struggled to get the ball out of our half which enabled Humboldt State to put together some nice goals. We kept playing hard and were able to score a goal.”

Cal State East Bay got off its first shot of the match in the 10th minute as Andres Ponce attempt was turned away by Lumberjacks' goalkeeper Kyle Verle. Tyler Andersen had a shot blocked by Verle in the 13th minute.

Humboldt State controlled possession getting off four shots in a two-minute span.

The Lumberjacks' Peter Darquea opened the scoring in the 33rd minute scoring his first goal of the season with an assist from Brian Holmes.

In the first half, Humboldt State out-shot Cal State East Bay by a 13-11 margin.

Humboldt State increased its lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute as Zach Hammond scored his second goal of the season.

Hammond added another goal with an assist from Darquea in the 55th minute.

The Lumberjacks scored their final goal of the match in the 66th minute as Brian Holmes put the ball past Pioneer goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer in the far right side of the net.

Cal State East Bay scored its lone goal of the match in the 77th minute. Javier Martin put in a rebounded ball off the post for his team-leading third goal of the season.

“We've been hurt with five key defenders going out with injuries,” Cumbo said. “We'll stay focused and move forward.”

For the match, the Pioneers were out-shot 28-18. Martin and Ponce led the Pioneers with five shots each. Bookhamer recorded 10 saves.

The Pioneers (0-4-0, 1-5-0) will be seeking their first CCAA victory of the season when they host Cal Stanislaus on Friday, September 23 at 4:30 p.m.
