Pioneers Fall to CCAA Powerhouse Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. –
The Pioneer men's soccer team was well aware their conference match against CCAA defending champion Sonoma State would prove a challenge. Sonoma State, picked to capture the North Division, is 2-0 this season having posted shutout victories on the road over Chico State and Humboldt State. The Pioneers couldn't find the back of the net, losing to the Seawolves, 9-0 on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Soccer Field.

“We were sloppy with the ball at times and Sonoma made us pay,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. “We generated some decent scoring opportunities, but never executed.” Their a strong team.”

Cal State East Bay's Javier Martin had a shot blocked by Sonoma goalkeeper Andrew Ball in the first minute of the match.

The following eight minutes, Cal State East Bay defense did a good job preventing the high potent Sonoma State offense from getting off a shot .

In the 10th minute, the Seawolves scored the first goal of the match as Justin Ferreira converted a header off a corner kick from Brian Angel.

The Seawolves continued the offensive pressure getting three shots in the following six minutes.

Following an offside call on the Pioneers, Ferreira scored his second goal of the match and third of the season in the 21st minute. CCAA Player of the Week Trevor Hurst was credited with the assist.

Cal State East Bay put pressure on the Seawolves defense the next eight minutes as Martin had his second shot of the half turned away by Ball while Conley Perry had a shot blocked and Rey Suarez attempt went wide.

Sonoma State made it 3-0 in the half as Aaron Glove recorded his first goal of the season with an assist from Michael Arroyo and Angel.

Martin and Christian Lara had shot attempts for the Pioneers in the final four minutes of the half.

The Pioneers continued good pressure in the second half as Martin's header was saved by Ball in the 58th minute. Paul Dewhurst and Christian Lara had two shots in the 65th minute. Lara had another shot go wide in the 69th minute.

Sonoma State controlled possession the remainder of the match. Ferreira recorded a hat trick in the 73rd minute to give the Seawolves a 4-0 advantage. Consecutive goals by Taylor Varnadore including one against Pioneer backup goalkeeper Patrick Gilbertson increased the Seawolves margin to 6-0 in the 79th minute.

The Seawolves added three more goals in the final 11 minutes to remain undefeated in CCAA play at 3-0 and 4-1 for the season.

In the end, the Seawolves outshot the Pioneers 25-12 led by Ferreira, Varnadore and Kelly Davila with four each.

Martin had a team-high four shots for the Pioneers. For the season, Martin has two goals and 13 shots.

Cal State East Bay, 0-3 in CCAA and 1-4 for the season, will travel to Arcata on Sept. 18 for a match with Humboldt State beginning at 2 p.m.

“This soccer program at Cal State East Bay is bigger than one match,” Cumbo said. “I have confidence in our ability to regroup for Sunday against Humboldt State.”
