Brawley's Late Goal Gives Pioneers First CCAA Victory of Season

SEASIDE, Calif. –
Katie Brawley scored in the 83rd minute to lift Cal State East Bay past Cal State Monterey 2-1 on Sept. 11. Brawley took a corner kick from Shianna Falk and scored her first goal of the season.

“The pass came right to Katie and she did a good job putting the ball in the net,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “It was the decisive goal in the game.”

With the score tied 1-1, Eugenie Foote had a shot knocked away by Otter goalkeeper Diana Zambrano in the 48th minute.

The Otters' Marlina Massagli got off her fourth shot of the game which went wide three minutes later.

In the following 15 minutes, the Pioneers had three consecutive shots, but were unable to score.

Pioneer goalkeeper Nina Cefalo came up huge turning away a pair of Monterey Bay shots on goal in the 68th and 69th minutes.

Foote's fourth shot of the game was saved by Zambrano in the 76th minute.

Brawley's decisive goal came seven minutes later and the Pioneer defense prevented the Otters from getting off a shot for the remainder of the game.

The Pioneers had three shots in the first six minutes of the match. Cal State Monterey Bay countered with an offensive blitz only to see Cefalo record three straight saves.

Gabrilella Bozzo gave the Otters a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute.

The Pioneers' Claudia Luna scored her second goal of the season in the 35th minute to tie the game. The goals was Luna's second of the weekend, after she scored Cal State East Bay's only goal in the loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Friday. The goal also gave Luna the early team lead with five points on the year.      

“It's nice to win early in CCAA play,” Gerace said. “The midfield did a good job and we had productive offensive attacks in the second half.”

For the game, the Pioneers outshot the Otters 16-12. Foote had four shots followed by Brawley and Kara Yamamoto with three each. Cefalo was brilliant in the net with a season-high seven saves.

The Pioneers, 1-1 in CCAA play and 2-2 for the season, will play at Sonoma State on Sept. 16.
