HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team sent six seniors out with a bang, topping Cal State San Bernardino 13-7 on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Pool. The Pioneers (17-10, 9-3 WWPA) used a pair of four-goal periods to take an 8-1 lead at the half and, despite being out-scored 6-5 in the second half, picked up the victory in the final home game of the season.
East Bay was led by
Liz Warren's three goals, while
Chelsie Bryan and
Whitney Bell each added a pair for the Pioneers, who saw nine different players score in the victory. Junior goalie
Jayme Pekarske made 10 saves and held the Coyotes to just one goal in the first 16 minutes of play before turning things over to senior
Kendra Mason to combine for the win.
The Pioneers got off to a fast start, holding hte Coyotes without a goal in the first period while posting four to take a 4-0 lead into the second quarter. Another four-goal period gave East Bay an 8-1 advantage at the break.
The San Bernardino offense woke up in the third quarter, as the Coyotes outscored the Pioneers 3-2 to cut the Pioneer lead to six goals, 10-4, through three periods. Though CSUSB scored three goals in the fourth quarter, East Bay matched the offensive output with three goals of its own to secure the 13-7 win.
Cal State East Bay returns to action tomorrow, as it travels to Fresno to take on Vanguard and Fresno Pacific.
