SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team picked up a pair of victories over Concordia (Irvine) and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday in Seaside. The Pioneers (16-10, 8-3 WWPA) ended a three-game losing streak with a 14-6 victory over the Eagles and an 11-6 WWPA win over the Otters.
Sophomore
Claire Pierce led East Bay with six goals in the matchup with Concordia, while junior goalie
Jayme Pekarske posted 12 saves in the win. The Pioneers got out to a fast start, scoring five first-quarter goals to take a 5-2 advantage. The scoring continued in the second with Cal State East Bay just outscoring the Eagles, 3-2, in the second to take an 8-4 lead into the half.
In a low-scoring third period, Pekarske and the Pioneer defense shutout Concordia, while the offense scored another two goals to gain a 10-4 lead heading into the final quarter. Though the Eagles scored two in the final eight minutes, East Bay sealed the win with four goals to post the 14-6 victory. Five players joined Pierce on the scoresheet in the first game, with
Tristan Kennedy-Donohue posting a pair and
Liz Warren,
Sally Parkinen,
Sarah Grunberger and
Sara Hudyn each adding a goal apiece.
Despite being shutout in the second quarter of game two, the Pioneers never trailed their WWPA rivals. After taking a 4-1 lead through the first period, East Bay allowed the Otters to creep back into the game when they went goalless in the second frame and went to the half leading by just one, 4-3.
The Pioneers turned the tables in the third period, however, outscoring Monterey Bay 2-0 to gain a three-goal lead through the first 24 minutes of play. A five-goal fourth quarter helped East Bay hold on for the 11-6 victory, despite the Otters' three scores in the final eight minutes.
Junior
Erica Crain led the way for the Pioneers in game two, notching a hat trick, while Pierce and Grunberger each added a pair. Kennedy-Donohue and Warren rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece. Pekarske was outstanding again, making eight saves and getting help from
Olivia Roberts to hold the Otters to just six goals. The two performances marked the 10th and 11th times this season that East Bay has allowed seven or fewer goals.
Cal East Bay returns to action next week when they play host to Cal State San Bernardino for Senior Day at Pioneer Pool on April 8 and then travel to Fresno to take on Vanguard and Fresno Pacific on April 9. The Pioneers and Coyotes are set to open Senior Day at 4 p.m.
