East Bay Edged by Bakersfield to Cap Regular Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team dropped a 7-5 decision to Cal State Bakersfield to close out the regular season on Sunday at the Roadrunner Invitational. The Pioneers (19-13, 9-6 WWPA) could not overcome a scoreless second period in their third loss to a WWPA opponent ahead of conference championships, beginning on April 29.

Sophomore Claire Pierce led East Bay with a pair of goals in the loss, while Jayme Pekarske made nine saves. Roadrunner goalie Megan Pezzolla made 21 saves to help hold the Pioneers to just five goals.

Cal State East Bay got out to a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, but could not get the offense going in the second period. Bakersfield outscored the Pioneers 3-0 to take a 4-2 advantage into the half.

Though the Pioneers bounced back and matched the Roadrunners in the third quarter, scoring a pair of goals to hold onto a 6-4 lead through the first 24 minutes of play. Though CSUB scored just one goal in the fourth quarter, East Bay could not close the gap, notching a goal of its own in the final period to give Bakersfield the two-goal win.

Cal State East Bay will return to action when it plays host to the WWPA Tournament, beginning on April 29. The Pioneers entered the weekend in second place in the conference and will find out their championships fate next week. The 2011 WWPA Tournament will be held at Chabot College in Hayward, April 29-May 1.
