Pioneers Tripped Up by Conference Opponents at Roadrunner Invitational

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team dropped a pair of contests to Colorado State and Santa Clara at the Roadrunner Invitational in Bakersfield on Saturday. The Pioneers (19-12, 9-5 WWPA) were edged by the Rams, 10-9, in the first game before falling to the Broncos, 11-5, in game two on the first day of their final tuneup before the 2011 WWPA Championships at Chabot College on April 29-May 1.

Chelsie Bryan led East Bay with four goals on the day, including a hat trick in the close loss to Colorado State. Sarah Grunberger, Danielle Comforti and Erica Crain each added two goals apiece for the Pioneers on the day, while goalie Jayme Pekarske posted 12 saves in the two losses.

In one of its closest games of the season in game one, Cal State East Bay matched Colorado State with three goals in the first period. The Pioneers added another two scores in the second to take a 5-4 lead into the half.

The Rams broke out with three goals in the third, but East Bay answered with two of its own to send the game into the final quarter tied at seven goals apiece. The game came down to the final eight minutes as Colorado State outscored the Pioneers again when it mattered, posting three goals in the fourth period to secure the 10-9 victory.

Facing the Broncos for the third time this season, the Pioneers fell behind early and could not mount the comeback it needed in the second half. Trailing 3-2 after the first period, Santa Clara held East Bay scoreless in the second quarter while notching four goals of its own to take a 7-2 lead into the break.

Though the Pioneers outscored the Broncos, 2-1, in the third quarter, SCU posted three more goals in the fourth to seal the 11-5 win. The victory was Santa Clara's first of the season over Cal State East Bay. 

Cal State East Bay will look to get back on track on Sunday, when it meets tournament host Cal State Bakersfield at 11:30 a.m. In the teams' first meeting this season, the Pioneers posted a 21-8 win on Feb. 12.
