ORANGE, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay water polo team finished out the Chapman Tournament with a pair of wins on Sunday, including Head Coach
Lisa Cooper's 150th victory at the helm. The Pioneers (8-6, 4-2 WWPA) knocked off Occidental, 13-6, to start the day before downing conference opponent Cal State San Bernardino, 10-6, to finish the tournament 3-1.
In game one, the Pioneers trailed 1-0 early but bounced back and got goals from
Liz Warren and
Erica Crain to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
East Bay would never trail again, as it got goals four straight goals from
Claire Pierce,
Whitney Bell,
Carly Clark and
Tristan Kennedy-Donohue to start the second period and take a 6-1 lead with 3:50 to play in the half. Occidental scored its first goal in 12 minutes to cut the Pioneer lead to 6-2, but East Bay answered back with Warren's second goal of the game just before the half to put the Pioneers up 7-2 at the break.
Though the Tigers scored the first two goals of the third period to cut the lead to 7-4, East Bay responded with a 3-0 run that saw goals from Pierce and Bell to increase its lead to 10-4 with 3:10 left in the third quarter. Occidental added another goal to end the period to close the East Bay advantage to five, 10-5, heading into the fourth quarter.
Bell and
Sara Hudyn opened scoring midway through the fourth period to put the Pioneers up 12-5. Though the Tigers scored one more, East Bay capped the scoring with a
Danielle Comforti goal with one minute left to finish off the victory.
Both Pierce and Bell finished the game with three goals to lead the Pioneers, while Warren added a pair. Julie Monday led the Tiger offense with three goals.
In game two, Cal State San Bernardino opened the scoring with a pair of early goals to take a 2-0 advantage. The Pioneers answered with a goal from Pierce to end the first period trailing 2-1. Pierce opened the second quarter with another Pierce goal to tie the game 2-2 with 7:06 left in the half. After taking a 4-2 lead on goals from Clark and Pierce, East Bay never trailed again. A goal by
Sarah Grunberger capped scoring in the first half and gave the Pioneers a 5-2 lead at the break.
Kennedy-Donohue started off the second half scoring to put East Bay up 6-2 with 6:42 remaining in the third period. Warren and
Ariel Noriega continued the Pioneers' eight-goal scoring streak to give them an 8-2 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Coyotes fought back in the fourth period, scoring the first two goals of the quarter, their first since the opening four minutes of the game. Leading 8-4, East Bay got a goal from Pierce with 2:59 left to play to gain a 9-4 advantage. San Bernardino added a fifth goal before Hudyn put the Pioneers back up by five with less than two minutes remaining. Though the Coyotes capped scoring and closed the gap to four goals, the Pioneers held on for the win, which marked Cooper's 150th of her career.
Pierce added another four goals in game two to bring her total for the day to seven, while Emily Hove paced the Coyotes with a pair.
Cal State East Bay returns to action next weekend when it travels to Sonoma State and to Davis to meet UC Davis and Santa Clara. The Pioneers open play next weekend against the Seawolves at 3 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
