Cal State East Bay Earns Split on Day One of Chapman Invite

The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team opened the Chapman Tournament with a split day on Saturday, falling to Mercyhurst, 7-6, before topping Cal Lutheran, 13-8, to cap day one of the event. The Pioneers (6-6) close out the tournament tomorrow against Occidental and Cal State San Bernardino.

In game one, a scoreless first quarter for Cal State East Bay eventually led to a narrow loss. After Mercyhurst took a 2-0 lead in the first, the Lakers took a 4-1 advantage into the half with another two goals in the second period. Though the Pioneers answered back with a two-goal third quarter to cut the Mercyhurst lead to 5-3 through the first three periods. East Bay outscored the Lakers 3-2 in the final period, but it wasn't enough as Mercyhurst held on for the 7-6 victory.

Cal State East Bay turned things around in game two, taking a 4-2 lead into the second quarter. The Pioneers never trailed from there, holding the Regals to just two goals in each period. East Bay added another two goals in second quarter to take a 6-4 advantage into the half. The Pioneers scored another four goals in the third to lead 10-6 through three periods. CSUEB capped the game with a three-goal fourth quarter to post the 13-8 victory.

East Bay returns to action tomorrow at 8 a.m. when it takes on Occidental to kick off the final day of the tournament. The Pioneers cap the day against WWPA opponent Cal State San Bernardino at 1 p.m.
