Pioneers Fall to No. 13 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 72-57

Cal State East Bay men's basketball team lost 72-57 to second place Cal State Dominguez Hills on February 19.

The Toros remain in second place in the CCAA at 16-4 and improve to 20-4 for the season.

With two games remaining in the season, the Pioneers have a CCAA record of 2-18. East Bay is 4-20 overall.

Mark Samuels led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points. Freshman Rodrigue Maza posted season-bests of 11 points and nine rebounds.

Brian Gee was the Toros' top scorer with 13 points. Michael Cox and Marcquintice Davis followed with 12 each.

The Pioneers got off to a 6-0 lead in the first half thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Will Freedman. Cal State Dominguez Hills tied the game 8-8 with 12:22 left on a three-pointer by Cornell Jenkins.

George Toyama hit a 3-pointer as the Pioneers jumped ahead 13-8 with 10:46 remaining. Cal State Dominguez went on a 17-0 run to take 25-13 advantage at the 4:43 mark. The Pioneers outscored the Toros 10-9 in the final four minutes, but trailed 34-23 at halftime.

Cal State Dominguez Hills extended its lead to 45-30 at the 14:54 mark of the second half. The Toros led by as many as 18 points with 8:42 remaining.

The Pioneers will conclude the 2010-11 season with a pair of road CCAA contests at Cal State San Bernardino on February 24 and Cal Poly Pomona on February 25.
