Game summary
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay water polo team finally got its offense going in the second game of the Triton Invitational, outscoring Cal State Bakersfield 16-4 over the final three quarters to record a 21-8 victory. The Pioneers (3-4, 2-1 WWPA) held the Roadrunners to under three goals in a period three times, while nine East Bay players contributed at least one goal in the win. Cal State East Bay now moves on for a rematch with No. 12 UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. tomorrow.
Both teams started off with a productive first quarter, as the Pioneers took a 5-4 lead into the second period. From there it was all East Bay, as the Pioneers held the Roadrunners to just four goals over the final 24 minutes of play. Meanwhile, East Bay posted seven goals in the second quarter to take a 12-5 lead into the break.
Another seven-goal period for the Pioneers put them up 19-7 through three quarters. The lowest scoring period of the game was the fourth, as East Bay scored just two and held the Roadrunners to one for the second time to cap the 21-8 win.
Sophomore
Claire Pierce scored a third of the Pioneers' goals with an impressive seven-goal performance to bring her total on the day to nine goals. Freshman
Sarah Grunberger added four goals to finish with six on day one of the tournament, while
Erica Crain contributed three scores and
Liz Warren rounded out the multiple goal-scorers with a pair.
Julia Charlesworth,
Danielle Comforti and
Sara Hudyn each scored their first goal of the season, joining
Whitney Bell and
Tristan Kennedy-Donohue with one goal apiece.
Shannon McKenzie and Bianca Adams paced Cal State Bakersfield with two goals each, while Megan Pezzola and Chiyeko Morasaki combined to make eight saves.
Cal State East Bay moves on to face No. 12 UC Santa Barbara in a rematch of their first game of the 2011 campaign. In that meeting, the Gauchos (7-4) came away with a 14-8 victory, despite a strong second half comeback for the Pioneers. UCSB will be the third nationally ranked opponent that East Bay has faced this weekend, with the Pioneers looking to post their first victory against a top 20 team this season. UC Santa Barbara posted a 12-3 win over No. 20 Marist after falling to Long Beach State, 5-2, in its first game this season.
The Pioneers and Gauchos are set to kick off at 12 p.m. at the Canyonview Pool in La Jolla. The winner will go on to face the winner of No. 17 UC San Diego and Maryland for ninth place at 5:20 p.m., while the loser will meet the loser of that matchup for 11th place at 4 p.m. Complete tournament info can be found on the
