LA JOLLA, Calif. - Playing its second nationally-ranked opponent in the last 24 hours, the Cal State East Bay water polo team could not match the offensive output of No. 6 Loyola Marymount in a 14-6 loss to open the Triton Invitational on Saturday morning. The Pioneers (2-4, 1-2 WWPA) led after the first quarter, but were out-scored 13-3 over the final three periods against the reigning WWPA champions. East Bay now moves into the consolation bracket, facing Cal State Bakersfield at 1:20 p.m.
Cal State East Bay opened the game with a 3-1 lead through the first quarter before the Lions poured on the goals, scoring four in both the second and third quarters and another five in the fourth. LMU held a 5-4 lead at the break, but out-scored the Pioneers 9-2 in the final 16 minutes.

Jayme Pekarske followed yesterday's 12-save performance with nine stops against the Lions. The final eight-goal deficit for East Bay wasn't for lack of trying, as the Pioneers forced LMU goalie Elise Ponce to make 14 saves to earn the victory. Three Lion players posted hat tricks in the win, with Casey Flacks, Alexandra Honny and Erin Manke each putting away three goals to lead Loyola Marymount.
The Pioneers now move on to face Cal State Bakersfield at 1:20 p.m. at the Canyonview Pool in La Jolla. The Roadrunners dropped a 13-11 decision to No. 13 Cal State Northridge in their first game of the tournament. Check the
