East Bay Drops Heartbreaker to Western Oregon, 73-71

MONMOUTH, Ore. –
The Pioneer men's basketball team stands at 2-1 for the season following a heart- breaking 73-71 defeat to Western Oregon in the Western Oregon Shootout on Friday night.

“Two good teams battled for 40 minutes,” Pioneer coach Will Biggs said. “We played hard, but just came up short.”

A lay-up by Mark Samuels gave the Pioneers a 63-59 advantage with 6:53 left in the contest. Jurrell Turner had a dunk and a lay-up as the Pioneers maintained a 67-64 advantage at the 3:28 mark.

The Wolves took a 69-67 lead with 2:25 remaining on a three-pointer by Jordan Freelander. A pair of free throws with 1:03 left increased the Wolves' lead to 73-69.

Turner had his second dunk of the second half with 56 seconds remaining as the Pioneers trimmed the Wolves' margin to a single basket.

The Pioneers had a chance to tie the game with 11 seconds left. Nick Marshall's three-pointer was no good followed by a missed lay-up by Turner as time expired.  

Jason Smith hit a three-pointer as the Pioneers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the first half.

The Wolves went on a 9-2 run to tie the game with 12:48 left.

A pair of three-point baskets by Kyle Long the following 40 seconds gave Western Oregon a 15-9 advantage.

Samuels converted a three-pointer as the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run to cut the Wolves' lead to 15-14 with 10:21 left.

The Wolves hit their fifth 3-pointer of the half to extend their margin to 25-18 with 7:55 remaining.

The following two minutes, the Pioneers went on an 11-2 run to regain a two-point advantage.

Samuels made a lay-up with 49 seconds left as the Pioneers maintained a 38-35 lead.

A dunk by Jamaal Veal with three second left gave the Wolves a 39-38 halftime edge.

For the third straight game, Samuels led the Pioneers in scoring with 20 points. Roshun Wynne followed with a season-high 15 points while Smith had 11.

Cal State East Bay will face St. Martin's on November 19 at 3:30 p.m.
