HAYWARD, Calif. –
Reserve Jayme Zahn scored a first half goal while Michelle Quintero added another goal in the second half to lift Cal State East Bay past Cal State Monterey Bay 3-0 on Sunday.

With the win, the Pioneers snap a four-match losing streak and improve to 3-6-1 in CCAA and 4-7-1 overall.  Cal State Monterey Bay stands at 1-9 in the CCAA and 2-9 for the season.

“It was great to snap our four-game losing streak,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said.  “Our goal for the remaining three weeks is to make a run in the conference.”

The Pioneer defense kept the Otters in check early in the match. Defenders Zuly Diaz and Breanna Baker along with goalkeeper Nina Cefalo turned away three Otter scoring opportunities.

Locked up in a scoreless tie, the Pioneers subbed in Carly Genzoli, Zahn and Quintero.

Cal State East Bay came alive offensively as Kara Yamamoto had a shot saved by Otter goalkeeper Kendra Gillio and seconds later Shianna Falk had her attempt blocked by defender Lauren Acker.

Zahn gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute with her first goal of the season.

The Otters had two shots in the final eight minutes of the half, but both attempts were turned away by Cefalo.

“Our players who came off the bench did a great job,” Gerace said.  “They really picked our team up.”

The Pioneers controlled possession to begin the second half. Yamamoto and Claudia Luna each had a shot go wide.

Baker knocked in a shot off a keepers' fumble in the net in the 50th minute to increase the Pioneer lead to 2-0.  For Baker, it was her first goal of the year.

A minute later the Pioneers Ariana Nobrega had a shot saved at the last second by Otter goalkeeper Diana Zambrano.

Quintero and Luna teamed up to give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage in the 72nd minute. Quintero, who recorded her first goal of the season, took a pass from Luna and put the ball in the net.

The Otters had a final chance to score in the 79th minute, but a shot by Alyssa Malfatti was saved by Cefalo.

“We had success late in the first half and carried it into the second half,” Gerace said. “We opened the playing field up and created scoring opportunities.”

Cefalo turned away four shots to record her second shutout of the season.

Cal State East Bay out-shot Cal State Monterey Bay by a 15-10 margin. Luna and Nobrega each had three shots.

“Luna played a great game,” Gerace said. “She was all over the field and created scoring chances for us.”

The Pioneers, who won both matches over Cal State Monterey in CCAA play, will host Humboldt State on October 14 at 4:30 p.m.
