Foote's Double Leads Pioneers Past Toros in Overtime Thriller

HAYWARD, Calif. –
Eugenie Foote scored her second goal of the match in the 102nd minute of overtime to lift the Pioneer women's soccer team past Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 on Friday night.

The overtime victory improves the Pioneers CCAA record to 5-9-1 and 6-10-1 for the season. Cal State Dominguez Hills stands at 6-8-1 in the CCAA and 8-8-1 overall.

Foote scored the winning goal on an assist from Shannon Fontes and Shianna Falk in the second overtime. For Foote, it was her team leading seventh goal of the season.

“The players were 100 percent committed to win this game tonight,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “I felt this was one of our best matches we've played since competing in the CCAA. Our team loves to play under the lights in Pioneer Stadium. Eugenie Foote played a great match and overall it was a combined team effort.”     

The Pioneers' Claudia Luna had a shot saved by Toros' goalkeeper Tiffany Hollis while Falk's attempt was blocked in the 8th minute of the match.

Cal State East Bay continued the offensive pressure as Katie Brawley had a header go wide in the 20th minute and five minutes later an attempt by Ariana Nobrega also went wide.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a golden opportunity to score in the 25th minute, but a shot by CCAA Player of the Week Jessica Murphy went high over a wide open net.

Murphy scored her team leading 14th goal in the 41st minute to give the Toros a 1-0 advantage.

  Early in the second half, Murphy had a shot go wide.

The Pioneers tied the match in the 52nd minute when Foote scored on a beautiful pass by Nobrega.

Foote had a near miss on goal in the 67th minute while Falk's header went high eight minutes later.

Luna had a shot punched out by Toros' goalkeeper Tiffany Hollis in the 66th minute.

In the 70th minute, Pioneers' goalkeeper Nina Cefalo turned away a shot by Murphy.

A minute later, Cefalo saved an attempt on goal by Niki Poole.

The Pioneers had two late chances to score in regulation when Zuly Diaz had a shot deflected by Hollis in the 85th minute and Nobrega's attempt was blocked a minute later.

The Toros' Paige Peel-Hand attempt on goal went wide in the 89th minute.

Luna had a shot go just wide of the net in the 93rd minute of overtime.

A minute later, Cefalo turned away a shot on goal by Nina King.

For the match, the Pioneers out-shot Toros 16-12. Foote, Luna and Kara Yamamoto all had three shots to lead the Pioneers. Cefalo had five saves in the victory.

The Pioneers will host Cal State L.A. on “Senior Day” October 30 at 2:00 p.m. Ariana Nobrega, Breanna Baker, Tenaya Davis, Carly Genzoli, Jessica Hamister and Michelle Quintero will be honored for their outstanding contributions to the Pioneer women's soccer program.
