Pioneers Blanked by Cal State Stanislaus in Road Finale

TURLOCK, Calif. –
The Pioneer women's soccer team was shutout in their road finale by Cal State Stanislaus 4-0 on Sunday.

With the defeat, the Pioneers are 4-9-1 in CCAA play and 5-10-1 overall. Cal State Stanislaus, which avenged an earlier defeat to the Pioneers, improves to 7-4-3 in the CCAA and 8-4-4 for the season.

The Pioneers had 17 shots, but were unable to find the back of the net. Shianna Falk and Zuly Diaz each had four shots.

Pioneer goalkeeper Nina Cefalo had five saves. The Warriors' Millie Brown turned away three shots on goal to record the shutout.

“We had a couple of breakdowns in the first half that Cal State Stanislaus capitalized on and then pushed up to try to equalize when they scored the second two goals,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Karenee Demery scored her eighth goal of the season.

Falk and Diaz had two shots go high the following two minutes.

The Pioneers had five unanswered shots in a five minute span, but were unable to score.

In the 34th minute, the Warriors made it 2-0 when Tina Benson scored with an assist by Demery and Allie Dugan.

Both teams had three shots apiece without finding the back of the net to open the second half.

Demery recorded her ninth goal of the season in the 76th minute to give the Warriors a 3-0 advantage.

Alexia Poon accounted for the Warriors final goal of the match in the 89th minute. For Poon, it was her sixth goal of the season.

The Pioneers return home to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on October 28 and Cal State LA on October 30.
