CHICO, Calif. - The Pioneer men's soccer team hung tough with Chico State, which was ranked second in the West Region, on Friday night. The Wildcats scored a goal in each half to defeat the Pioneers 2-0.
Chico State, which posted its ninth shutout in 15 matches, improved to 8-3-2 in the CCAA and 9-3-3 for the season.
The Pioneers are 1-12 in CCAA play and 2-13 overall.
“We got off to somewhat of a slow start in the first half,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “We had a missed clearance off a corner kick that they scored on. We had a positive response after that and played very competitively for the rest of the game. Overall, I thought the guys were committed for 90 minutes.”
In the 10th minute, Micah Miranda gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead when he scored his first goal of the season off a deflected shot by Tyson Crim.

Bryce Bookhamer turned away a shot by Ferid Celosmanovic in the 22nd minute. Seconds later, the Pioneers'
Tyler Webster had a shot go wide.
The two teams exchanged shots the remainder of the first half with neither team finding the back of the net.
Javier Martin had a shot go high in the 37th minute while
Andres Morales attempt was blocked three minutes later.
Chris Akwaja had a shot saved by Bookhamer in the 42nd minute.
Chico's Jacob Darr had a shot go high to open the second half.
The Wildcats continued the offensive pressure in the 48th minute with three shots in front of the net.
Luke Palmer put the match away for Chico State with a goal from 28 yards out in the 88th minute.
The Pioneers had seven shots, none of which were on goal. Chico State recorded 17 shots on goal.
Bookhamer was outstanding in the net for the Pioneers as he turned away four Wildcat shots on goal.
Cal State East Bay will play at Cal State Stanislaus on October 23 at 11:30 a.m.
