Pioneers Blanked by Humboldt State

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer men's soccer team was blanked by Humboldt State 4-0 on Friday.

The victory snaps a six-game losing streak for the Lumberjacks who improve to 3-8 in the CCAA and 3-9 overall. Cal State East Bay stands at 1-10 in the CCAA and 2-11 for the season.

“We came out very flat today,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. “We made some mental mistakes as a result and Humboldt State did well scoring goals.”

The Pioneers leading scorer Javier Martin had a shot go wide in the 2nd minute. A breakdown by the Pioneer defense in the 3rd minute nearly resulted in an own goal.

Humboldt State had three shots in the following five minutes, but was unable to score.

The Lumberjacks were able to breakthrough first and grab the lead in the 16th minute on Ray Lind's second goal of the season.

In the 25th minute, Braxton Griffin came off the bench to give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 advantage, dribbling from 30 yards into the box and putting the ball past Pioneer goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer.

The Pioneers best scoring opportunity came in the 35th minute when Daniel Borst shot was saved by Lumberjacks goalkeeper Kyle Verle at the last second.

Cal State East Bay continued to put the pressure on Humboldt State the final 10 minutes of the first half.

The Lumberjacks regained possession to begin the second half. Sam Wahl had a shot go high in the 52nd minute and a moment later Zach Hammond had his attempt deflected by Bookhamer.

Hammond converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute to give the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Hammond scored his second goal of the match as the Lumberjacks extended their advantage to 4-0. For Hammond, it was his team leading sixth goal of the season.

The Pioneers final scoring opportunity came in the 87th minute when Andres Morales shot went wide of the net.

Cal State East Bay was out-shot 15-5. Andres Ponce had two shots for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers will host Sonoma State on October 16 at 11:30 a.m.
