BERKELEY, Calif. – On the strength of
Claire Pierce's four goals and
Jayme Pekarske's nine saves, the Cal State East Bay water polo team downed Cal Baptist, 8-5, on Saturday night in the Cal Invitational in Berkeley. The Pioneers (1-1) shut out the Lancers in the first period and used a four-goal third quarter to pick up its first victory of the 2011 campaign.
East Bay opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period, shutting down the CBU offense in the opening eight minutes. The Pioneers put up another pair in the second quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the half.
Cal State East Bay out-scored the Lancers 4-2 in the third quarter to take an 8-3 advantage into the final period. Though Cal Baptist scored a pair and shut out the Pioneers in the fourth, East Bay held on for the victory.
Pierce's four goals led all players and give the sophomore utility nine scores in just two games so far. Junior utility
Erica Crain added a pair of goals for East Bay, while
Liz Warren and
Tristan Kennedy-Donohue notched a goal apiece. Christina Webb led the Lancers with three goals.
Making her second start as a Pioneer, Pekarske's nine saves against CBU bring her season total to 15. Camryn Rogers made nine saves for the Lancers in the loss.
Cal State East Bay returns to action next weekend in the annual Alumni Game on Jan. 29 at Pioneer Pool. The Pioneers get back into the regular season on Feb. 4 when they play host to Sonoma State in their first game of 2011 against a conference opponent.
