Pioneers Battle Throughout in Setback Against No. 7 Toros

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's basketball team battled for 40 minutes in a 70-52 defeat to CCAA leader and seventh ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, 70-52, on Jan. 13.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, 8-1 in the CCAA and 12-1 overall, jumped out to a 15-4 lead and increased its margin to 32-10 with 2:13 left in the first half. The Pioneers outscored the Toros 7-6 to trail 36-17 at halftime.

Roshun Wynne's jumper enabled East Bay to cut the Toros advantage to 59-50 with 5:17 remaining. Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 6-0 run to lead 65-50 at the 3:01 mark and outscored the Pioneers 5-2 the remainder of the way to secure the victory.

“We competed well as a group,” Pioneer coach Will Biggs said. “I'm proud of our kids for coming back against a big and strong Dominguez Hills team. We did some good things on the court.”

The Toros shot 55.6 percent from the field and converted 25 of 29 free throws. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 35-17 advantage on the boards.

The Pioneers played good defense forcing 21 Toros turnovers and shot 52 percent from the field in the second half converting 13 of 25 shots.

Will Freedman led the Pioneers with 16 points before fouling out in the second half. Wynne had a solid game for the Pioneers with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Mark Samuels scored seven points while Brandon Hrboka followed with six on 3 of 3 from the field.

The Toros' Zareh Zargaryan led all scorers with 20 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. Robert Willhite added 11 points.

The Pioneers, 0-9 in the CCAA and 2-11 for the season, will host Cal State LA on Saturday, January 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
