The junior opposite was the story of the week for Pioneer volleyball. Suzy Ni Xu had one of her best weekends of the season, helping East Bay to a 1-1 record. But it was her resilinecy and toughness that really gave her team a lift. Xu was having an excellent match on Friday against Cal State LA, hitting .400 with eight kills early in the third set. However, she sustained what appeared to be a serious leg injury on a block attempt and had to be helped off the court. After the match, her status was uncertain. But Xu was right back in the Pioneer lineup the following night, receving a big ovation from the East Bay fans and showing little sign of being limited physically. Xu proceeded to hit .480 with three blocks, and a team-high 15 kills on Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. She was instrumental as the Pioneers erased an 0-2 deficit and won an emotional match in five sets.
