Hodges was a two-time team captain for the Pioneer men’s wrestling team. He took first place at the Cal Poly Invitational Championship in 1967 and was named the Bay Area Wrestling Association Outstanding Wrestler the following year. During the 1969 season, Hodges was not scored upon at the Far Western Conference Championships and was selected as Cal State Hayward’s Most Valuable Wrestler. He later qualified for the Olympic Training Camp Finals and was the Bay Area Wrestling Association Champion in 1970 and 1971.
