Cal State East Bay University Athletics

Two of the greatest years in Cal State Hayward basketball history occurred in the mid 80’s. Not only did the Pioneer men’s basketball team capture a pair of Northern California Athletic Conference titles, but they also won back-to-back NCAA Division II Western Regional Championships. Michael Harris was the point guard on Cal State’s two West Regional Championship men’s basketball teams in 1984-85 and 1985-86. It was  Harris who sunk a 17 footer and added a three-point play in the late going as the Pioneers registered their first victory ever in NCAA post season play knocking off 16^th ranked Norfolk State 64-61 in the opening round of the 1984-85 NCAA II West Regionals. Cal State Hayward captured the NCAA Division II West Regional Championship with a 51-48 victory over Cal State Northridge. Michael Harris, who scored 40 points in the two games, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
