Barneson was Cal State’s version of Babe Didrickson in the sixties. She was an outstanding athlete even before arriving on the Cal State Hayward campus. Barneson was voted the most valuable Women’s Basketball player on the Pacific Coast by the National Amateur Athletic Union in 1964. She was also an outstanding bowler, having captured the California State Junior Bowling Championships in 1960, 61, 62, and 63. Barneson won a total of 42 tournaments. While at Cal State Hayward, Barneson was a four year competitor in basketball and softball, and competed for three years in volleyball. She spent one year competing for the Badminton team. Barneson was a key performer for Cal State Hayward’s 9-0 women’s basketball team in 1965.
