Don Chu will go down as one of the most instrumental coaches and athletic trainers in Cal State Hayward history. As an assistant men’s track and field coach, Chu coached the jumpers. During his tenure Chu coached 17 NCAA Division II national championships and 50 All-Americans. Two national champions, Dave Haber in the high jump and John LeGrande in the triple jump, were produced as the Pioneers won the 1977 NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships. Among the national champions Chu coached were CSUH Athletic Hall of Famers Dave Haber, Jim Moran and Doug Garner. Chu was also instrumental in developing the athletic training program at Cal State Hayward.
