Al Mathews began his illustrious 29 year career at Cal State Hayward as an assistant men’s basketball coach in 1963. He took over as head coach of the baseball team in 1964. Under Mathews the Pioneers won consecutive Far Western Conference Championships in 1971 and 1972. Mathews compiled a nine-year record of 147-161. In 1971 Mathews replaced Lew Comer and became Cal State’s second Athletic Director. During Mathew’s regime, Intercollegiate Athletics at Cal State Hayward prospered on both the national and conference levels. Six National Collegiate titles were captured, including woman’s soccer in 1988. Sixty-four teams earned conference championship honors.
